I can’t wait to read Francesca Giannone’s debut novel ’La Cartera’ (@duomoediciones )!

However, It is not only ’La Cartera’s content that awakens my curiosity; when I saw the beautiful cover, I recognised it as one of P.S Krøyer’s paintings. The Norwegian-Danish painter and his wife Marie created a double portrait in which they painted each other and the cover of ‘La Cartera’ features Marie’s half.

Also, looking at the cover and wondering about the Italian–Scandinavian connection behind it (if there is one), I remembered another Italy related ’encounter’ with Krøyer, this time during our family trip to Rome last April, more exactly at Caffè Greco, popular among foreign artists and intellectuals in the late 19th century. Who happened to be there in 1890? Exactly, Mr. And Mrs. Krøyer! Next to our table was a card, featuring one of his self-portraits, pinned to the wall! Today I’m glad I can’t help taking photos of absolutely everything when travelling (swipe left ←)! ツ

The Krøyers also visited southern areas like Naples and Amalfi. I’m curious whether the choice of cover is a purely aesthetic one? Giannone’s novel is inspired by her own great-grandmother (Italy’s first female post employee!), so maybe there are more true story inputs? I can’t wait to find out!

The list of quotes could be endless; Viktor Frankl’s wise words on meaning, overcoming, suffering, resilience and the essence of life (and humanity in general) are more relevant than ever. And I believe the world would be a better place if his books, especially ’Man’s Search for Meaning’, were assigned reading in all schools, in all parts of the world.

Tried (but failed!) to suppress the urge to share my garden’s first dahlias of the year (mine start to bloom when everyone else is digging up their tubers for winter storage!). So to soften the hubris effect, I chose one of my favourite book covers to match the miracle on the tray: ‘Travels with a Writing Brush. Classical Japanese travel writing from the Man’yōshū to Bashō.’ (Penguin Classics).

My pre-ordered copy of @_kimberlysnyder ’s ’The Hidden Power of the Five Hearts’ is delayed for another week, so while I wait, I thought I’d read ’The Holy Science’, the teachings of Sri Yukteswar that inspired her work and research on the heart and the heart-brain coherence.

’The Holy Science’ is a short book, but dense with information and insights on astronomy/astrology and the cosmic cycles (Yugas), Yukteswar’s theory about the five stages of the heart (and how these are directly linked to the brain/mind), the parallells between universal religions, the human enlightenment through history, etc.

Some paragraphs benefit from a second (or third!) reading for deeper assimilation, and I really appreciated that this edition includes a chapter with additional content explaining the teaching’s key topics (and yes, I loved the cover! ✨).

This book is a true gem if you have an interest in ancient teachings, philosophy and the science behind human growth – and the fascinating theory of the five hearts! Now I can’t wait to read @_kimberlysnyder’s book! 🧡
